
The History of Down House Bromley
English biologist and scientist, Charles Darwin’s former house is known as Down House. Today, Down House is a heritage site in Bromley.
This house was built in the 17th or 18th century according to records. In 1778, the house was bought by a rich landowner, George Butler. The house was a box type house with a wonderful garden. The house owners changed from time to time. After the Darwin family lived there, the house became the property of the UK government.
The Story of Down House Bromley
Charles Darwin lived this house for over 40 years until his death. Darwin came to this house in 1842. He lived in this house until his death. In 1996, English Heritage developed this house as a heritage site in England. They reopened it to the public in 1998. There are some changes to this house since Darwin’s time. Darwin’s outdoor laboratory has become a garden. Most of the time Darwin used to stay in this outdoor place. Both his writing and experiments were done in this outdoor laboratory. Charles and Emma’s bedroom is on view now. The bedroom was open to the public recently, in 2016. The English Heritage closed the site to make access to the bedroom. There are still some books in that room.

There are many things to do and see in Down House. You can have a lunch or afternoon snacks in Darwin’s kitchen. Especially interesting, some of the ingredients are from Darwin’s garden and kitchen. So, you can have a full experience if you visit this place. From April to the end of October, Down House is open to the public on daily basis.
